WHO ARE THE THIRSTIE THIRDS?

A brief potted History of Thirstie Thirds: Thirstie thirds are the illegitimate offspring created by the success of their "parent" soccer club Balmain Rovers ("Rovers").

The story begins at the end of season 2001 when Ricky Onsman the
Manager of Rovers decided to expand the club to a third side who would
compete as a feeder side to the then succesful squads of Rovers season
2002.

From this vision came "Thirds" who through their own successes in the
season 2002 became a team in their own right and created an identity
within the Balmain Rovers club as Thirstie Thirds.
The Thirstie tag came from their exploits after the game as the name
would suggest.

To date we have had three complete seasons as a team.

Season 2002

In our first year of competition in Canterbury & District Soccer
Football Association Premier League Division 4 Reserve Grade we came
second in the minor premiership and second in the play offs.
We were beaten in a 4-3 thriller in the grand final by Enfield who had
also won the minor premiership, going through a season with only one
loss (to Thirds).

Season 2003
After the success of 2002 both on and off the field Thirsties added a
second team of like minded players.
In season 2003 Thirsties played in the Canterbury & District Soccer
Football Association Premier League Division 4 and Division 4 Reserves. The season was again a success with the new members of Thirsties adding
to the friendhsips and bonds that had already been formed - both on and
off the pitch.

On the pitch one team from the squad finished as major premiers in
PL4/Firsts coming through from 3rd place on the ladder to defeat
Roselands, minor premiers Burwood and finally Earlwood in the grand
final 4-1.

The Reserves side finished in 5th spot after a two game play off with
Roselands (0-1) for the 4th semi final spot.

Season 2004
Season 2004 saw Thirds move up a number of divisions to compete in the
Canterbury & District Soccer Football Association Premier League
Division 2 and Division 2 Reserves.

Yet again Thirsties enjoyed a successful season both on and off the
pitch with out new sponsors the Excelsior in Glebe.
The season highlight (lowpoint) was losing the preliminary final three
two to Earlwood in extra time. Through various workings of Canterbury we
were expected to play a fresh Earlwood 24 hour after playing a tight and
physical game with another Balmain side in a play off.

Thirsties are a side of friends who enjoy playing a game of competitive
soccer each weekend of the regular season, but who recognise that it is
the friendships created that are more rewarding than the soccer.
As the name suggests the friendships are created as much off the pitch
as on and thirsties enjoy nothing more than to debate the relative
merits of each game over a quiet beer or three at the Excelsior, our
friendly sponsors.

We remain a part of our parent organisation of Balmain Rovers, who
currently have teams both in Canterbury & District Soccer Football
Association Premier League Division Sydney Amateur League.
Both squads are part of the Balmain & District Soccer Club (our
grandparents), which has teams in various divisions of the competition,
and provides us with a home ground and any equipment we haven't
purchased ourselves.
