Accentuating the positive

by Max Stern

Carousel is unique to American musicals, a pioneer in the serious treatment of a vernacular subject. The plot involves a carousel barker names Billy Bigalow (Stephen Howden), an out-of-work misfit who attempts robbery with his criminal pal Jigger (Alan Cohen), and stabs himself rather than submit to the law. He dies in the attempt to provide support for his expectant wife (Devorah

Barenholz) and unborn baby. In heaven, he is sent back to earth with his guardian angel (Paul Hare) to redeem his past by performing a good deed - setting his wayward teenage daughter straight (Ma'ayan Leeper).

This is a big LOGON production. A large, well drilled chorus and attractive soloists (Victoria Howden and Ed

Spitz) fill the stage with lots of motion and gesture. They are complemented by beautiful traditional sets and costumes, and a respectable, amplified pit band.

The inspiring "You'll Never Walk Alone" (sung by Jane Davidson) and the poignant character role of the rough carousel owner (Yamima Osher) with a soft spot for Billy,

provide darker hues, contrasting a breezy and entertaining conception, with a bit of chiaroscuro.

The production generally avoids peaks and troughs, and gracefully sidesteps the tragic sides of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.
