Hypnosis - "A peculiar altered state of consciousness distinguished by certain marked symptoms, the most prominent of and invariable of which are the presence of continuous alpha waves on the eletroencephalograph, hypersuggestibility in the subject, a concentration of attention on a single stimulus, and a feeling of 'at oneness' with the stimulus. Hypnotic states may be induced by various techniques applied to oneself or by another."

On the assumption that ESP relies on altered states of consciousness CPSG ran an experimental subgroup titled 'Psi Under Hypnosis'. The idea was to see if hypnotic suggestion would help to increase the subject's ability to perform various ESP tasks. These tasks included; determining the colour of cards beneath a cloth, astral projection, and past-life regression. Whilst intriguing, and much fun, no convincing evidence was found for either hypnosis increasing psi ability or even for ESP itself. |
